Daily devotional: Let go of the world

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the father in you.
1 John 2:15 NLTse

How many Christians get sucked into and continue to stay enticed by the cravings of physical pleasure, coveting what we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions (v.16)? Especially in the United States? It would likely be much easier to ask how many break free of this worldly mentality. These things are empty, not from God.

Let go of what the world offers us! Do what pleases God (v.17). Obey His Word (v.5) and live life as Jesus did (v.6). Think long-term profit, not quarterly results! By remaining in fellowship with the Son and with the Father, we enjoy the eternal life He promised us (v.25)!

Lord, your way is not the easy way that logically flows from our nature. Just as many companies foolishly focus just on quarterly results and are led to ruin, it is easy to think short term on what I see, rather than to think long term on that which is currently harder to see. Help me to break free and stay free from worldly perspective, focusing first and foremost on You. Help me to live my life as Jesus did. And thank you for graciously giving me the Holy Spirit and for living in me so I can do that which would be otherwise entirely impossible!
