Daily devotional: Unity & Community

Scripture
"I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one--as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me."
John 17:21 NLTse

Observation
When Jesus prayed for those of us who would later believe in Him, He prayed for protection from the evil one (v.15) and for unity (vv.21, 23). By this special unity (Jesus in the Father, the Father in Jesus, we in Jesus, Jesus in us, us in each other, and we in the Trinity), the world will know that God sent Jesus and that God loves them. It is no surprise that Jesus chose these two topics to pray for us just by looking at the church and what still needs to be top on our prayer list. Many are turned away by the church's lack of unity, and many believers are immobilized by the evil one. But what sweet community God has designed for us to experience!

Application
Pray fervently for protection and unity of all believers.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us insight into these two special requests Jesus prayed for us even before we were born. I pray in Jesus' name that you would protect us now from the evil one and draw us into perfect unity as You intend for us. Open our eyes and let us not be immobilized or splintered into denominations and factions that do disservice to Your Holy and Precious name. May it be so, in Jesus' name!
