Daily devotional: Fasting and enlisting others in prayer

And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled.
Ezra 8:21 NLT

Ezra had a significant, important prayer request. They were traveling on a 900 mile route during good weather, prime time when kings took their armies to war; they were traveling with a huge amount of silver and gold that was gifted as offerings to the Lord God, and Ezra had not requested soldiers and horsemen from the king since he had told the king that God would protect them. Ezra didn't just pray--he enlisted everyone to pray with him, and they all fasted as a way of humbling themselves before God. God heard their prayer and granted their request!

Humble myself when I go before God in prayer. Make fasting a more normal part of my prayer life, especially when praying for significant requests. And enlist others to pray in unity before God as Ezra did.

Lord, You are so good! Your faithful love endures forever. Thank you--I am so grateful that Your gracious hand has been on me as it was for Ezra. May I similarly devote myself to study and obey Your Word, and follow You in the work You set out for me. Please help me not to just casually pray. Help me mature in my prayer life and truly humble myself before You. Thank you for hearing me! I love you, Lord.
