Daily devotional: A higher standard

The former governers, in contrast, had laid heavy burdens on the people, demanding a daily ration of food and wine, besides forty pieces of silver. Even their assistants took advantage of the people. But because I feared God, I did not act that way.
Nehemiah 5:15 NLT

Even Christians justify behavior or just behave in ways that everyone else is acting without giving it further thought. Nehemiah set a great example by not continuing in the shoes of all who came before him. Rather, he chose a life above reproach that honored God and His precepts.

Consider carefully my behavior. Test my actions and plans to see whether they match this standard. Pray for Jesus to live His life through me and for the Holy Spirit to always be in control and guide me.

Lord, thank you for pointing this out to me today. Thank you for all that You are doing in my life. I don't want to veer off course or make compromising decisions. Jesus, please live Your life through me. I give all of myself to You. Holy Spirit, please work in me and through me. Please guide me and enable me to make the best decisions that reflect my respect for You. Thank you for your indwelling power, guidance, joy, and strength! I love you!
