Daily devotional: Faith and sound doctrine

He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
Titus 1:9 NIV

Paul describes the character traits and behaviors that should be evident in the lives of elders/overseers in the church. As a leader in the church, my faith must be strong and based on a solid foundation that I can hold firmly to. I need to know the Scriptures and Gospel message inside and out so that I can encourage people with sound doctrine and steer people into the truth where they diverge from it.

Live an honorable and blameless life, know my faith well, and hold to sound doctrine so that I can encourage others and show others when necessary where their doctrine diverges from God's Word.

Lord, this is a God-sized task that I am not capable of doing without Your indwelling Spirit and the power of Jesus Christ. Thank you for loving me and teaching me Your ways. Please grow me and work powerfully both in me and through me. I love you!
