Daily devotional: Submit to authorities

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.
Romans 13:1 NLT

Not only does obeying the authorities avoid punishment, but it also allows us to keep a clear conscience (v.5). My conscience is not always clear in the way I drive, so this verse is challenging to me. It is a great litmus test to help me make decisions that will bring glory and honor to God (e.g., to fix the car rather than "fudging" an emissions test), and help keep His reputation pure rather than being a stumbling block for any who might otherwise discount faith in Christ due to the actions of those who claim to be His followers.

Obey God's Word by submitting to my authorities and doing what is right. Enjoy the blessings of honor (v.3) and clear conscience (v.5) as a result.

Lord, thank you so much for Your Word and especially for all the instruction you have jam packed into the book of Romans. Please amplify my conscience. And Holy Spirit, just as You have filled me and made Your presence especially evident to me this morning, please continue to fill me, make Yourself always at home within me, and give me strength to live in a way that always brings honor to You. I love you, Lord!
