Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.
1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV
There has been so much hoopla about the prayer of Jabez, and people clinging to it as a magical success potion, that it makes me leery of the verse--almost wanting to skip over it and just choose something else for reflection today. But there is definitely truth to glean! God cares for His people and He has blessings in store for us. The keys are our intentions and our hearts. When we want God to be glorified and when we want to be part of what He is doing--when our intentions are in the right place, God will grant those requests (see 1 John 5:14-15). As James 5:16 says, the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. But we can certainly discard the request made out of selfish motives!
Ask according to God's will and pray earnestly with God-sized requests presented in faith. Then give Him the glory when He works.
Lord, I love you! I praise You and give You all glory and honor. I pray that You would lead me into the work You have for me. Please do far beyond what I can ask or imagine here at Faithbridge, at home, in my personal walk with You, and in all the relationships You have blessed me with! I want to know You and be an increasing part of the work You are doing!
