Daily devotional: Pray for those in authority

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 NIV

It is amazing to understand that Paul encouraged believers to pray for those in authority when their government was not led by someone sympathetic to Christians but rather was led by the infamous Nero who was wicked, corrupt, and killed many. But it makes total sense to pray for those in authority for their benefit and for ours!

Pray for my leaders--government, military, work and church. Pray for them to have wisdom and discernment, be blessed, come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord, and lead us in a way that will enable more and more people to be saved and have knowledge of the truth.

Heavenly Father, thank you for President Obama, for his counselors, for my senators and representatives, for my governor, mayor, judges, officers, and all the others who work to lead, serve, and protect us. Thank you for Pastor Ken and the others you have provided to lead me and serve You at Faithbridge. I pray that You would fill each person with Your Spirit, that You would lead them into all truth, and that You would give each person strength and desire to lead well. Please protect them, bless them, and use them to further Your Kingdom, for good and not for evil. I pray Your peace over each one. Thank you, Lord!
