Daily devotional: Care for the poor and homeless

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Isaiah 58:6-7 NIV

God has been challenging me that my behavior and priorities need to better reflect His commands to care for the poor and homeless. While it isn't that I do nothing, I think He is challenging me to significantly up the ante. He has been speaking to me through each homeless person I see, through reading Same Kind of Different As Me, through watching the movie Lord, Save Us From Your Followers, through Keith Green's music, and of course through His Word. And although it would be enough for God to simply command us to obey, obedience to this command also comes with promises:
  1. Your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. (v.8)
  2. You will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. (v.9)
  3. Your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. (v.10)
  4. The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. (v.11)

I cannot ignore God's Word but rather must take action, determine how I should be more involved and have a greater impact, so that I am obedient to God's command and so that others will see the love and compassion of Jesus in action through me.

Lord, thank you for not just telling me one time what is important to You, but rather for reinforcing it over and over. You know I am dense in some things that I shouldn't be! Thank you also for showing me more of the how recently. I pray for your clear continued direction in how to be obedient to you in caring for the poor and homeless. Holy Spirit, please guide me. Also please keep my priorities clear so that I do not purposely or inadvertently become too busy and put it off. I love you!
