For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
2 Peter 1:5-7 NIV
These are not just good virtues to ponder. The Apostle Peter, who knew our Lord Jesus as well as anyone on earth, commands us to make every effort to learn and practice, to possess, these virtues. And not without reason:
- These will keep me from being ineffective and unproductive in my knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ (v.8)
- It will show that I remember I have been cleansed from my past sins (v.9)
- Possessing these virtues will ensure that I will never fall (v.10)
- When I reach heaven, I will receive a rich welcome! (v.11)
Grasp and put into practice increasing measures of faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love for everyone.
Lord, You are awesome and worthy of all praise and exaltation. I know You have been speaking to me and challenging me to put my faith and love into action, not to sit on the sidelines and just profess faith in You. Thank you for educating me even further with Same Kind of Different As Me and What Difference Do It Make? to help answer some of the questions I have been praying to You. Lord, please give me the strength to live the life You are calling me to, to hear You clearly and act in obedience. Help me be a willing servant, pliable and easily molded into a godly man after Your own heart. Please help me to take my family and friends along with me. Work in their hearts as You work on mine. Give us spirits of boldness and not of timidity, that we may take this journey together and experience all that You have in store for us. I love you, Lord!
