Daily devotional: Warning to those living in luxury and self-indulgence

You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.
James 5:5 NIV

God has not called us to live in luxury and self-indulgence. Instead of pushing to get ahead in this life, He calls us to have compassion on the poor, the orphan, and the widow. Instead of being self absorbed and focusing on our own comforts and needs, He calls us to love others and to elevate others above ourselves. And we should remember that we live in the last days. We have a message to share, not to live in our own cocoon.

Don't be caught up by the affluent society I live in. Use wealth wisely to honor God, not to live a self indulgent life lived in luxury without true concern for all the people who are around me.

Lord, thank you for this beautiful morning, for the rest and for the beauty of Your creation that is all around me. Thank you for Your gift of life and for a new day to commune with You and with those You have surrounded me with. Please help me to keep a view on wealth that honors You. You have put me into a society that esteems wealth, luxury, and self-indulgence. Please help me not to think that way or to fall into wealth's traps. Instead, Holy Spirit, please infuse me with Your thinking and Your values. Help me to use the wealth You have blessed me with to honor You, to bless those who are poor and needy, and to share Your message of redemption with so many people who need You. Show me how and when to do this so that I don't stay inactive. I love you!
