Daily devotional: Do not forsake my first love

"I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love."
Revelation 2:2-4 NIV

It is not enough to do God's work or even to persevere and endure hardships for the name of Jesus. First and foremost, Jesus calls me into a personal walk with Him.

I should not neglect doing what the Lord Jesus commanded, but yet I need to always remember Jesus as my first love. Seek Him first. Seek communion with Him. Seek His face.

Lord Jesus, I love you. Thank you for the letters to the seven churches in Revelation. It is surreal to think about what You have waiting for Your church for all eternity in heaven. Thank you for giving me Your Word. Please draw me closer to You than ever. Please reveal Yourself to me, and unwrap the layers of sin that come in the way of close communion with You. Help me to be the man of God I seek to be; in action but also in close ties to You personally. Thank you for loving me perfectly and holding me in the shadow of Your hand.
