Daily devotional: Give up everything to be Jesus' disciple

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:33 NIV (see vv.25-35)

I started out in life having many ambitions, focused on selfish and material things to bring me contentment and happiness, and focusing on what I could get out of relationships. But when I came to Jesus, He called me to lay all those selfish ambitions aside, daily die to self (pick up my cross), and choose to follow Him above all else. Although the benefits are immeasurable both in my life now and for eternity after I die, it is still something I have to daily commit to and choose intentionally.

Don't hold onto my life and my selfish ambitions. Choose to lay down my life, completely surrender and follow Jesus with everything I have and everything I am.

Lord, I give myself to You. Please whittle me and mold me into the man after Your own heart. Help me to grow in humility and willing servitude to You. Reveal Yourself to me, and fill me with Your Spirit to overflowing. Help me not to hold onto material possessions and selfish ways of life. Thank you for the surpassing greatness of knowing You! I love you!
