Daily devotional: Serving God rather than money

"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
Luke 16:13 NIV

Money is not evil in itself, but the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10, Hebrews 13:5). Jesus instructed us to use money to gain friends (v.9), to help the poor and needy, the widow and orphan. He spoke against living in luxury while leaving others destitute.

Be a shrewd steward of the financial resources God has entrusted to me, not keeping it all for myself but using it wisely. Serve God, not money.

Lord, you are worthy of all praise. I love you! Thank you for this new day. Thank you for revealing Yourself and Your ways to me through Your Word. Help me even when the message is not what I want to hear to receive it and live it out. Holy Spirit, enable me by Your power to follow Your ways. Jesus, I die to myself today and always, and I ask You to continue to live in me and through me. Please help Stephanie and me to be wise stewards of the financial resources You have entrusted to us. Help us balance what we keep for our use versus what we use to make friends for the Gospel and to help ease the burden of social inequities.
