Daily devotional: What do we truly value?

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field."
Matthew 13:44 NIV

We have been given the Good News about the kingdom of heaven. It is worth more than all else we have. But do we treat it like this man who found treasure in a field? Do we sell all else we have our desires set on so that we can take hold of this treasure? I am too often more like the seed sown among the thorns in the parable of the sower, who lets the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth distract my attention and my focus on the treasure of far greater value that is before me.

Treat the treasure of the kingdom of heaven for what it is. Put the Lord God first above all else. Don't try to have dual allegiance to God and the things of this world.

Lord, Maker of heaven and earth, You are holy and awesome. Thank you for revealing Your kingdom to us, things hidden since the beginning of time that You chose to reveal through Your Son Jesus. Lord, I don't want to be like the seed that grows up among the thorns, whose fruitfulness is choked out by the things of this world. Instead, please make me like the good soil which produces great fruit from the seed planted within it. Thank you for this great treasure You have revealed to me. I am so grateful and love you and grab hold of Your salvation! Thank you for giving me eternal life through Jesus Christ. Thank you for preparing what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no mind has imagined for me and all others who love You!
