Daily devotional: Bearing fruit

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful."
John 15:1-2 NIV

Bearing fruit is a command and the reason God chose and appointed us as His own (v.16). We cannot be fruitful without remaining in Jesus (vv.4, 7); apart from Him we can do nothing (v.5). But we also need to be careful that we do bear fruit--for if we say we are in Jesus but bear no fruit, Jesus says that the Father will cut us off! When the Father prunes us in discipline, it is not pleasant, but it is helpful to make us more fruitful.

Don't waste time going about life for my own purposes and pleasure, but see that I am focusing on fulfilling God's purposes for me and bringing Him glory.

Heavenly Father, thank you for teaching us through what John recorded from the Last Supper. Thank you for reminding me of the centrality of bearing fruit. Please keep me from meaningless distractions and help me to be strategically focused. Even though it is not fun, please prune away at me so that I will be of maximum use to You. Show me how to break out of the mold of this world's ways, and give me the strength to do it! Help me to make every moment count. I love you and am so grateful that You called me to be Yours.
