Daily devotional: Pray for the Lord to steer my heart

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.
Psalm 119:36-37 NIV

This is a simple prayer that caught my attention today. I tend towards materialism, towards selfish gain and worthless things. The author apparently did too, and thus asked the Lord to turn his heart toward the Lord's statutes.

Ask the Lord to turn my heart too that it will dwell on His statutes rather than on worthless things or selfish gain.

Lord, I love you. You are magnificent. You have far better things for me than to waste time on selfish gain and worthless things. Help me not to be distracted by the lure of wealth or by the lie that stuff can keep me happy, or that stuff is even an appropriate goal to have. Instead, make me always passionate about Your ways, Your Word, and Your Son's amazing death and resurrection for me. Thank you for giving Jesus to atone for my sins and to lead me into real and fulfilling life!
