Daily devotional: We quickly forget

The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel. After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel.
Judges 2:7,10 NIV

It is amazing how quickly we forget significant things that happen in our lives and instead have a tendency to live in the moment. I think back to things that the Lord has done in my life and am amazed how quickly those things fade into the background. So it is no surprise that the next generation, who would not even have the advantage of first-hand experience of seeing God's amazing hand at work, could fall away. What is key to me is to make every effort for the next generation who comes after me to not fall into the same circumstance.

Pray diligently for my children to be tender towards the Lord and to eagerly desire Him. And train them up in righteousness, passing on to them what the Lord has taught me and done for us.

Lord, You are indeed awesome. I am sorry that I so quickly forget the amazing things You have done, and that I tend to have a hard time seeing Your hand at work now. Help me to remember the great things You have done, and help me to diligently pass these things on to my children. And please make their hearts tender towards You, giving them an eager desire for You.
