Daily devotional: Danger in conventional wisdom

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles."
1 Samuel 8:19-20 NIV

God does not want us to think and act with the conventional wisdom and characteristics of peoples around us. The standards of this world are not to be our standards; they often lead to idolatry, or at least much less than the abundant life God has for us. 2 Corinthians 10:3 reminds us that "For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does." Those of us who are God's children by adoption through repentance, acceptance of Jesus' atonement for our sins, and allegiance to Him are to always see things through spiritual, biblical lenses.

Hold fast to God's Word and see things through the perspective God teaches us through it. Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Lord, You are holy and perfect. Thank you for sending Your Son Jesus to save me. Thank you for the righteousness I have that is not due to my performance but is instead due to Your sacrifice. Help me to see things with biblical lenses. Show me where I am settling for conventional wisdom or practices from this world that are not in accordance with following You or that lead me to less than the abundant life You have to offer. I love you!
