For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face.
Psalm 11:7 NIV
First, the Lord is observing and examining men, especially the righteous (vv.4-5), because He is Himself righteous and loves justice. But second and what stuck out most to me is that the benefit, the inheritance of upright men is that we will get to see the Lord's face. The Bible talks often of seeing God's face (His character, a closeness and intimate fellowship with Him, knowing who He is) and seeing God's hand (seeing God do things that can only be credited to Him, God helping us by hearing our prayers and meeting our requests). Not that wanting to see the Lord's hand move is a bad thing, but I think I usually fall short in expectation of just wanting to see His hand rather than to see His face, to actually know Him instead of just know about Him and about what He does. To know Him, to see His face, is of much higher value, and what the Lord desires for us.
Seek God's face, to know Him and be in intimate fellowship with Him. I must be upright, repentant, and poor in spirit to expect this.
Lord, I love you. Let me not fall short of what I hope for in You. Let me not just seek Your hand but seek Your face. That is enough for me, my portion and my prize.
