Daily devotional: God did it, not me

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
Ephesians 2:4-5 NIV

It is not like I was seeking after God and found Him because of my diligent search. Rather, I was as good as dead in my transgressions and sins. My inherent tendency is to follow the ways of this world, gratifying the cravings of my sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts (vv.1-3). Because of this, I deserved death. But thanks be to God! He is rich in mercy. And by His grace, He sought me out and lifted me out of the pit I was digging for myself. He made me alive in Jesus Christ! I am reconciled to God through the cross.

Don't forget my position in God's household and that it was not my works that brought me into His family, but rather the lavish mercy and grace that my Lord showed me.

Lord, You are so amazing. I get caught up in the busyness of life, with family, work, church, and friends. I realize that I forget where I've come from, and why I enjoy this position of great privilege in You. Please reveal Yourself more and more to me. I want to know You deeply and be rightly related to You. Thank you for sparing me from the destruction I was headed towards, for lifting me out through Christ Jesus! Thank you for Your mercy and grace. Thank you Father for sending Jesus to make this new life possible for me. And thank you Jesus for humbling Yourself and being obedient even to death on the cross. Thank you for rising from the dead to conquer death once for all and to usher Your chosen ones into abundant life. It is so good to be loved by You.
