Daily devotional: Train up my children

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 22:15 NIV

I want my children to just "get it" and even get frustrated when they do things that come from folly. And I see all around me parents who want to love and be friends with their children but not discipline them, or let them figure out the big decisions of life on their own. The Bible speaks against all of these approaches. Our children start out as foolish. We are to train our children in the ways of the Lord, and discipline them to drive folly far from them. Doing that will be for their greatest benefit and will be in obedience to the Lord's commands for parents.

Teach and discipline my children to mature them and drive folly far from them.

Lord, thank you for this new day. Thank you for blessing me with so much opportunity and enjoyment in each area of my life. I trust in You, because I know that Your ways are good, and following wholly after You brings abundant life and contentment. Please help me as I seek to teach and discipline Ian and Elise. Guide me as I seek to mature them, teach them, and drive folly far from them. Use the situations that arise each day as opportunities to build into them, and help me have ideas and strength to be intentional in my approach. I love you!
