Daily devotional: Perseverence and focus

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV

As a runner, I have to get rid of all the extra stuff that burdens me down and slows me down, and instead focus on the destination and on how to efficiently get there. This is how it is with the Christian life too.

Be self-controlled. Focus on the prize awaiting me (eternal life with Jesus my Lord), and persevere by fixing my eyes on Jesus so that I will not grow weary and lose heart during the tough parts of life.

Lord, thank you for starting to impress this thought on me earlier this morning. Jesus, You are such an awesome example to follow, worthy of all my focus and attention. Please help me to be self-controlled, to overcome my desires to be lazy and distracted from what counts. Work in me to make me the man You are calling me to be. Mold me into Your likeness. Draw me close to You! I love you.
