Daily devotional: Joy in spite of difficult circumstances

Scripture
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights.
Habakkuk 3:17-19a NIV

Observation
It is incredible to see Habakkuk's faith even though everything around him is evil and in desperate condition. His statement is like that of Job. It is hard to think that I could rest as securely in my Lord and rejoice in Him if I were in such dire straights. I would struggle with anger toward God and have increased doubt.

Application
Choose to rejoice in the Lord; be joyful in God my Savior regardless of the external circumstances. Recognize that it is the Sovereign Lord who provides my strength and all my capabilities. Trust in Jesus, and call on the Holy Spirit to fill me, to guide and instruct me, and to give me His peace.

Prayer
Lord, I choose to serve You and put my whole faith and trust in You. Thank you for showering your blessings on me so that even the thought of such a dire position as Habakkuk was in is difficult to fathom. But regardless of my external circumstances, I choose to trust wholly in You. I do affirm that all my strength comes from You. Man thinks he is great, but when our strength is sapped, we realize how little we can really do on our own. You grant life and strength. Thank you!
